La Maison de Matisse
This painting has been sold

Oil on hardboard 8" x 8"
This was a bit of a cloudy day weatherwise (I can see some Stalybridge colours creeping in there, haha) and threatening a bit of rain so the sky was quite interesting and not that flat Provencal blue you mostly see. Matisse's family house is huge, like a mini chateau. How come these guys came from such wealthy families? Poor old Van Gogh and Cezanne, they never had this sort of backing. Most of the decoration though on this house is actually painted on - it's "trompe l'oeil" - that ochre coloured stonework and even some of the shutters I think are just painted. So maybe they were trying to save money after all?

Hi Sheila,
I love your blog. I had forgotten to bookmark it and could not remember your name (sorry) but I eventually stumbled upon a link on E.B. Gordon's blog !
Believe me, it's bookmarked now.
Anyway, I didn't know about Matisse's background. Cezanne's family lived simply, but I think his father was rich : a hatmaker who became a banker. Paul Cezanne had much money problems though.
Your painting is very interesting.
Hi Sheila. Lovely painting of a building. Although Van Gogh was
almost the poorest Artist in those
days, he did have a brother named
Theo ( I think ). He owned an Art gallery and he of cours helped Van out several times. What a brilliant
painter wasn`t he? I always felt
sorry for him ( still do actually ).
By the way, there is some of Lowry
in your work. In my opinion he was
one of the best. Probably that is
why I love you paintings. All the
best Sheila.
Vic.
Ghislaine, thank you. Yes, you are right about Cezanne. I think many of the Impressionist painters seemed to come from rich families but there was this expectation that they would follow in father's footsteps (ie, become bankers and the like) and it was a real struggle for many of them to survive.
Vic, as you say, poor Vincent had his brother Theo who did always try to give him time and support. I also feel very sad about Vincent and especially that his wonderful talent was not really appreciated fully during this lifetime. Thanks for your comment about Lowry. I never thought myself to be anything like him expect that he wanted to document the north of England in his paintings and that I really admire.
Hi Sheila,
just stumbled over this painting of yours and as I am a big admirer of Matisse I was curious to read what you wrote about it. Coincidentally I am reading his biography at the moment and learnt that he was by no means from a rich family and struggled very hard for decades until he finally became successful with his paintings. So he did actually earn his money by selling them!
By the way, I really enjoyed strolling through your paintings - they are WONDERFUL!!
Feel like swapping some day?
That's weird Liza - how come such a big house then. Anyway, very nice to see you here. I always enjoy checking out your blog. Will drop you an email.
