Figure study 9th August 10

Pastel on Murano paper approx 18" x 11"

This paper comes in different colours. I love the slate grey as a background for working on skin tones. It does have a bit of a "tooth" and I am beginning to wonder how pastel behaves if worked onto a very smooth surface. I must say I am liking the integrity of the colours pastels provide.

I hope your enjoying your pastel work as much as I am. It's a wonderfully direct medium.

Hi Sam, yes, I am enjoying it. I love the immediacy of it as you say. No messing about with paints, water, medium, etc.I've not given them up but it feels good to have a change without too much fuss!

A change of medium is always welcome.
Have you noticed a difference in time of completion?
How has your color-blending been?
(There are positives and negatives in both issues for me when I use pastels.)

DJ - No, completion of a work this size is similar to when I use acrylics or oils. I needed two hours to complete this one. I work the whole surface lightly with pastel, sometimes using the edge as a drawing tool and sometimes just lightly blocking in with the side of the pastel. I continue to work the surface so that the layers become quite dense. Use my fingers for blending as I like that blended look but I'm still working on this technique.
