An early Christmas present

My daughter gave me some money for Christmas in order to choose a book (like a kid in a sweet shop). I added to it and bought this wonderful catalogue compendium to the current exhibition at the Whitney in New York. Apparently it was shown in Germany and Holland in 2009-10. How on earth did I miss that!!

"Modern Life: Edward Hopper and His Time traces the development of realism in American art between 1900 and 1940, emphasizing the diverse ways that artists depicted the sweeping transformations in urban and rural life that occurred during this period".

It has already begun to reacquaint me with American painters of that time - George Bellows, Guy Pene du Bois, Walt Kuhn and many others whose work I so admire. And a couple of marvellous "new" Hoppers that I didn't know about.

Happy Christmas to all and a peaceful New Year to the world.

It's a wonderful book Kay. So many of these larger, hard backed "art" books can be a little showy and disappointing but this contains some excellent articles on the artists of that period and the colour plates are of high quality. Have a happy christmas day!

Leslie hi, best wishes to you too. For me it is the "quietness" of Hopper that seduces.

Sally, yes, I would love to have seen it. That quiet dignity that exudes from Hopper's paintings! Hope you have a good painting year too Sally. Thanks.

Barbara, I am rushed off my feet to be honest and not finding much time for painting. Why is it that it is precisely that which gets pushed to the edge with us girls? I am hoping things will settle down painting wise soon and hope for a great painting year 2011. All the best to you too Barbara both in your personal life and your painting life!
