An early Christmas present

My daughter gave me some money for Christmas in order to choose a book (like a kid in a sweet shop). I added to it and bought this wonderful catalogue compendium to the current exhibition at the Whitney in New York. Apparently it was shown in Germany and Holland in 2009-10. How on earth did I miss that!!

"Modern Life: Edward Hopper and His Time traces the development of realism in American art between 1900 and 1940, emphasizing the diverse ways that artists depicted the sweeping transformations in urban and rural life that occurred during this period".

It has already begun to reacquaint me with American painters of that time - George Bellows, Guy Pene du Bois, Walt Kuhn and many others whose work I so admire. And a couple of marvellous "new" Hoppers that I didn't know about.

Happy Christmas to all and a peaceful New Year to the world.

Tom

Charcoal pencil, charcoal and graphite on paper approx 16" x 12"

The last Studio Session before Christmas. Only four of us braved the snow and ice. I have had no time to paint so I was desperate to do something and Tom was great to draw.
