Couple
Oil on hardboard 8" x 8"
It's amazing to me what I am still learning about colour after what seems such a long time of painting. I am learning to be very careful of introducing earth colours into shadowy areas. They can kill a painting if you are not careful. My reliance on the umbers and the ochres has to be tempered in some way. Must experiment with using just the cadmiums and see what happens.
This top painting - Couple - turned out in digital image to be slightly bluer than it is in reality but I like it, so when it is dry I may put a blue wash over part of the painting.

The girl in the yellow/orange/ochre triangle dress in a sea of blues/greens is riveting! Love it!
Thanks Cynthia!
I agree with Cynthia..wonderful painting
I agree with all the above. The contrast of light and shadow, especially on the figure, is visually stunning! Lovely.
Thanks for the visit Kay and Jami.
Hi Sheila,
This is beautiful. I haven't seen a painting of yours yet that was hurt in any way by earth colours in the shadows.
Your work is so exceptional.

Thanks Barbara, I sometimes see it,not immediately but a couple of days after. It can be corrected with glazes but nice to get it "right" (what's right?) at the start. No, I take that back.
Whether it's the color of shadows or letting go of being "right", learning later in life is a real head-smacker. Speaking of smacking my head, concussions are suddenly all over the news. I don't know why; we always had 'em. Obviously.
Oh, yeah... forgot to say I love the glance askance.
Oh, you have a spate of concussions in Boulder, Colorado ms. Sam? Well, yes, the glance askance is my dear daughter so it figures. And learning is a constant. So is being scared of spoiling things. Oh dear.
