Christopher

These two were done last night at the Studio Session. The top one is done in ordinary black ball point pen and the second is in Pitt charcoal. Still experimenting with media. I am mildly irritated by the fragility of charcoal and pastel drawing - not the results so much as the process. I hate how you have to "be careful" in case it smudges and storing them is a pain.
Christopher was a most interesting man to draw. He is a member of the Art Guild but maybe the model didn't turn up and he offered his services. Glad he did. Thank you Christopher.

you have been so productive since your return from Ethiopia! they are wonderful, almost surreal works and i particularly like 'brother and sister' and France I.
these pen and charcoal drawings are wonderful, they have a natural fluidity to them. btw, you mentioned charcoal smudges: have you tried a chamois leather and putty rubber (the leather is good to wipe charcoal off cleanly, unlike anything else and the putty is good to put highlights in or wrking in tighter areas of the painting.

Hi Rahina. Thanks for the visit. Yes, I'm trying to make up lost time. Three weeks without painting is too long although I think our brains are working on it even if we don't realise it. The charcoal - thanks for the tips (I do use a putty rubber but will try chamois as well) but still you have the fragility of the finished product - has to be framed behind glass and carefully stored till then etc.

spray it with the special lacquer sold in art stores specifically for this purpose or even hairspray... an artist told me that hairspray works just as well to set the charcoal and it is cheaper.

Thanks again Rahina. Sounds like I am being difficult but I do spray (several times) with Winsor and Newton fixative but the surface is still prone to smudging. Not to worry. I think that is in the nature of the media and if we want it's advantages then we have to pay the price. Thanks for your kind help.
