Self portrait on blue (re-worked)

Acrylic on hardboard 8" x 8"

I am beginning to see that painting on a dark, opaque undercolour, makes me paint differently and be much more conscious of edges. Maybe it's the same for everyone? This one was painted on a fairly deep saxe blue underpainted surface. Nice to explore these differences with small works like this.
Since first posting this painting I have done some re-working to it including re-establishing the blue background, removing detail from the shirt and re-describing the face. I like now how the attention is drawn immediately to the face where the only notes of warm colour are.

Love these self-portraits. Very direct and approachable. A wall of several (!) would make an interesting study.

Hi Sam.. not sure about a wall full ! A guy on British tv lately had compiled a painting from about 100 self portraits which looked interesting though.

Hi Sheila,

I like both versions and your description of why you've done what you've done in the reworking. I see what you mean. I've done paintings over a dark ground, and also used black in places where I want a bright pop of light over top. I like both methods.

Barbara - the methods are endless aren't they. I feel as if I don't want to stop "finding out". I'm always saying "I wonder what will happen if..."
