Practice pieces

Oil pastel on card approx 6" x 6"

Oil pastel on card approx 6" x 4"

I know some people work in this size regularly but these are tiny for me. What was I practicing? Well two things: firstly how oil pastel works on a surface and secondly how to create people from my imagination.

Your practice is like finished work. Love these and the previous work. Very lovely. I am not good at pulling people out of my imagination.

You are wonderful at it.

The oil pastels are so immediate Barbara and they work quite differently on different supports.

I find that working tiny forces a simplicity and sometimes a visual power. You've achieved this with these pastels, don't you think? They look large and sculptural. Can't wait to see what you create next. Marie

Marie, I'm really delighted that you can see a bigger "dimension" here. Of course it is what I love about your figurative work too - that sculptural quality. I find it somehow harder to achieve when working directly from life but I'm learning that I can take a life drawing and just carry on working on it. Thanks so much.
