I went to Heaven (re-worked)

Twas a small town, lit by a Ruby, lathed in down..

Photomontage and acrylic on wood panel 12" x 12"

This was the hardest so far. ED's idea of heaven was not a cloudy, fluffy, insubstantial place. My grandmother (pictured) would be delighted to discover that heaven was a small town. She was not a country girl nor was she a city girl. She was always a small town girl. I like that metaphor very much.

Since first posting this I have re-worked it, getting rid of the large darker shape in the foreground.

I like that you're using acrylic on this ED series. Perfect for collage! Do you use any mediums or just the paint? In any case, the series continues to be wonderful.

Sam, I stopped using water with the acrylics a few months ago (apart from washing brushes out). I use mainly a clear gel from W&N called "Slow drying medium".Its good for blending edges but mostly I just use the paint. W&N do a flow improver too which can be useful sometimes. I don't think I could work in this way with oils. I develop the painting as I work, changing my mind continuously.

Sheila , I think that you, like Dickenson, and like many of us for that matter, although we muse, confront and contemplate our mortality – we also love and cling to the natural world!
I think it’s also ingenious of you by the way to take these amazing photos that you cherish, and to incorporate them like other worldly jewels or masterpieces into your enigmatic paintings - by way of preserving them and extending their meaning!

Marcia, yes of course, it's true. I am actually a very practical person and I do love life! I think growing up without brothers and sisters though probably helped a degree of introspection. I was always among adults and left to my own devices a lot. I'm glad you see the photo images like little jewels. I had not thought of it like that, but yes, I think they are!
