Self portrait December 2011
Acrylic on wood panel 12" x 12"
This felt good to do. A more constructivist approach using palette knife - particularly in the early stages - and brush. It's a good way to get colour variation and also lets me feel as if I am "building" something. Even after so many layers I can still see the wood grain on the finished piece. I like that.

I hope you really do like this; it's one of your finest portraits. I am not just cheerleading here. Please do not paint over it, as you are wont to do. I'd consider purchasing it, but I think you should exhibit it somehow.
This is very strong, Sheila, your self portrait – beautiful light and color! – a good approach, your constructivist approach!!!
Hey Sam, I know you only say what you really think. Have no fear. This one I do like actually and I will not paint over it. I was happy with the new palette (banished the umbers and the dark blues) and with the paint application style. My referent is tending to be "Do I find this way of working (even the slightest bit) tedious"? And the answer is - no, I'm don't - so I'll try a few more like this I think. Thanks for the possible purchase but I need to keep hold of it for a bit.
Hi Marcia. Thanks for that. The light and colour I hope is coming from the new palette (see answer to Sam)which on the whole tend to be mid tone opaque colours, except for one blue-violet - ultramarine violet - which I am using to continuously re-draw on the painted image. I don't know if I used the right term in "constructivist" but it felt like construction when I was doing it.
Like this so much. I can feel your presence in the painting. Great verve in the whole thing. Amazing hair. Love it.
XO Barbara
Thank you Barbara. Whenever I do a self portrait I'm always glad I have white hair!
Never saw white hair look so good. A real beauty!
I agree, this is stunning!
Thank you Nancy and Liza. It was enjoyable to do, so it's heartening when people say they like it.
