Learning strategy for this painting: I knew I wanted with this one to play around with middle values and have been trying to follow Frank Gardner's sound advice on this. The sky in the photo was bleached out and I had to use my photo editor to really darken the whole pic to see any cloud shapes at all. Then I just used memory for the colours in the sky. It was actually great fun and I learned a lot from this painting. I resisted tampering with the turquoise areas in the pavement and road which I had laid down with the acrylic underpainting (I am learning to exaggerate parts of photos, certain colours etc which look potentially interesting). I figured if it looked awful it was only a piece of hardboard and I could just re-use it but I'm reasonably pleased with this one.

  1. Hi Sheila, I have really been enjoying your bicycle paintings, you must have been getting ready for this for a while needing so many photos. They're really nice and such a variety. Sounds like you're trying a lot of different techniques to keep it interesting.

  4. Thanks Don, this one came much more naturally to me in many ways even though I broke "new ground" with quite drastically altering what I saw in the photo!

Sheila, what a marvelous series! I've been away without internet or e-mail so I'm seeing your new stuff in one fine burst. Fabulous concept + execution. Love how you're trying new stuff. I love your work + love how you're always curious. The painting I bought for my husband is in our kitchen now, in between two of mine, about the same size. It's so clear which are mine + which is yours (different continents, lighting, painting styles) but wonderfully complimenting each other. Big cheers.
