This is a darkish one but somehow it sings more in real life than it does here. It was the yellow wall which interested me most. You never find that in England but in Florence (where this is) it would be common. The dying rays of the sun were hitting it fiercely and it made a strange and hypnotising sight to see this lady sillouhetted against it.
Learning strategy: I painted many layers of colour beneath the yellow, occasionally lightly sanding the whole thing down in between, scumbling colour I felt instinctively would be there somewhere. I would find this very difficult to do in oils but it's easy in acrylics because each layer dries so quickly. As to the colours, well, after all the wall is probably stone faced with a concrete render and what colour is stone? Sorry it doesn't show up so well in the photograph.
Hi Sheila. Really love the Africa paintings. They're quite something. Very skillful.
ReplyDeleteLook forward to seeing your 'cycle' paintings as they unfold. Really inspirational!

Thanks Marjorie. I'm finding it good discipline to have my subject decided for me in advance. Gives me scope to try out some different approaches.
ReplyDeletelove it. They always look better in person.
