Oil on canvas 24" x 24"
Moving towards what one wants to paint more than anything, which is ultimately what we need to be doing (Robert Henri reminds artists in 'The Art Spirit' to "Find out what you really like if you can ... and then sing your song" although he later admits it's a tortuous journey, in fact on page 164 he says "It is not easy to know what you like. Most people fool themselves their entire lives through about this"). I can only discover what I like to paint more than anything by deeply assessing the work- and that does not necessarily mean in words - what strikes me most about my own work, by comparing pieces and approaches. When do I feel most satisfied in the process and output of painting.
"Self-acquaintance is a rare condition." Sheila, I am re-reading The Art Spirt too! I love your "Chair"!!
ReplyDeleteIt sure is - he hit the nail on the head there! I suppose we put all sorts of sub conscious reasons as obstacles in the way of discovering ourselves. But life would be boring if it was all straightforward. Thanks Teri.
