Bicycle Lane

This painting has been sold

Oil on hardboard 8" x 8"

Learning strategy: I wanted the buildings on the right to be merely suggested but to feel authentic. I mixed the separate piles of colour for them first and then just applied it as freely as I could. I wasn't sure about the green on the tree but it seems ok now. I am certainly getting more used to trees (making yourself paint things you are not sure of is good practice!) There were so many objects and bits and pieces in the background but it was easier to simply represent those things as horizontal and vertical shapes of colour, in fact just single strokes of the brush.

  1. Great value control to make a complex scene "read" with clarity and depth.

  2. Thanks Don, yes it was complex - people, objects, lamp posts, cars. Glad you think it worked ok.

  3. Great assembly of "bits and pieces" and you've handed the tree and buildings with confidence. Lovely.
