Gerhardt Richter

Been watching a video of a 2011 Tate restrospective of Richter’s work. What immediately strikes you is the variety of his style of output.  No, that’s not what immediately strikes you. What strikes you is his skill,  his sensitivity and his sincerity and then his search for saying – this is me,  no,  this is me,  no, this is me.  Or yes, this is me and yes, this is me and yes, this is me also.  There is a beauty about all of it of course.  He's a bit of a Matisse that way.  And I think to speak truthfully may or may not lead to a consideration of beauty.  That’s a different story.   But we get too worried about the scattered fragments of our output as artists.  We are not one, unvariable, receptacle for experience. Our neurons sometimes must sleep and sometimes wake – different ones.   Stop worrying and keep painting.

Remember- the way you prefer to paint may not be the only way you can paint, nor the way you ought to paint.
