Oil on canvas 30" x 30"
On the
Beach
Some years
ago I was at the beach with my family. Quite a few families were there. Near us a grandfather dug obsessively into
the sand – I think making a trench around a sand structure he was building. His
grand kids had gone – into the sea, eating ice creams, playing beach ball. They
were not interested. He dug and dug. It was an obsession. He recognised no one. And we watched
him. We did not take photos but his
image is etched onto my brain. It was funny and horrific at the same time. It
took an effort not to link it with digging your own grave.
There is a
beach photo in this painting up at the top. It shows a leaden sky and a sand
castle in the foreground. It is just from memory. The old guy was in his own world.
