Acrylic, charcoal and pastel on canvas 24" x 24"
I grew up surrounded by paper patterns as my mother was a local dressmaker in her spare time so I was used to fabric being laid on the floor and patterns being place around it to make the best possible use of what fabric she had. Anyone who has done any dressmaking will know that the phrase "Place on fold" is a common one for paper patterns. For instance the pattern piece for the back of a blouse will often just be the shape of half of the back of the blouse. Folding the fabric and pinning the pattern on along that straight fold will result in a full back blouse shape once you have cut it out.
Ok, this series is more about natural earth developments than anything that humans get up to but the fact is that human acitivity has become a strong force in the impact on nature, although nature always wins and will always win. One predominant difference in the creativity of the force of nature and the force of the human species is the general lack of straight lines and symmetry in nature whereas that is a common reference point in human activity.
The other thing is I am so happy to work with big shapes. Everything is a big shape once you get your nose straight up to it! And the nearer you are, the more you see.
